The other day, I was looking for a cool way to explode a glacier (yes, of course this is for a novel, I don’t exactly have a glacier in my back yard) and I came across a substance called thermite. There are several different kinds, the most common of which is aluminum thermite .The chemical reaction when this stuff burns is exothermic (gives off heat) and also releases oxygen, so basically it can’t be smothered because it creates its own fuel source. The only way to put out thermite is with a lot of water. And I mean a lot. This stuff is used to weld metal underwater.
Another amazing thing about thermite is how it reacts with ice. The show Mythbusters did a segment where they lit thermite over several blocks of ice and caused a massive explosion (see video link)! Some chunks of ice flew a hundred and fifty feet!
I’m definitely going to use thermite (lit by another explosive source) in my current novel for my colossal, I mean glacial, explosion.
